One of the biggest reasons an email will end up in the spam folder is when the domain has not been whitelisted by the subscriber. Always be sure to include instructions for every major email system including Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail and AOL mail as to how to whitelist your domain so all your emails are received.

Another reason emails will hit the spam bin is poor choice of wording in the title or body. Be careful when using words like,'make money' or '$1000's earned' or anything else that could be perceived as a spammy advertisement as most email providers automatically assign those type of emails to spam folder. Just find more creative and clever ways to say what needs to be said. And, constantly test to ensure your emails are being opened and read.

Here are two notable reasons why most marketing mails end up in spam folders.

    1. Predictable formats: While it is fully true that it is very time consuming to make new email templates for each and every person in your address list, it is one of the weakness that we are yet to address. Most email filters are able to detect that BCC and CCC who then evaluate the number or bulk of the messages and determine the folder into which it should be sent to. If its too much, the spam folder is your email's destiny!

    2. A lot of links!: Have you ever thought why a email filter wouldnt send an email to the spam if its carries more a specified number of links leading to the same place? I dont think it requires any more explanation! :p

Those are some excellent points! How does one go about getting their domain whitelisted?

Once blacklisted, it is quite tough to whitelist your domain because most of the email blacklists share their data over time. So, if you get your domain black listed, then the chances of others blacklisting your domain is also high. A few steps you can take are the following

    1. Ask your relevant subscribers to ensure that they add your email addresses to their important contacts list. Its actually something you can ask, but the chances that people doing it are really less (because we all get those and how many of us are doing it :D)

    2. The only other alternate you could do is....well....use another email ID? But I am not sure if it would work because the IPs from which the emails originate are blocked and not the email ID itself.

I guess that more work has to be put into e-=mails in order to avoid spam filters. Thank you for the tips.
